Adelaide
General Info
Not many backpackers make the effort to go down to Adelaide, but it should be considered. It's not nearly as dull as its' reputation suggests.
The city centre is quite compact and easy to get around. King William Street is the main street. Victoria Square is the centre and you'll find bus and tram stops around here. The central bus station is on Franklin Street. Rundle and Hindly Streets would have most pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Things to see and do
There are a few museums and art galleries such as the Art Gallery of South Australia the South Australia Museum (North Terrace), and the Migration Museum (Kintore Avenue). The Old Adelaide Goal, a prison built in the 1798 provides tours. There's Botanical Gardens on North Terrace. The Adelaide Festival of Arts is on in March.
Diving with Sharks
If you like diving and sharks why not try diving with sharks. The waters off South Australia are known as the Great Southern Bligh and are home to the highest concentration of Great White Sharks in the world. There are tours offering cage dives with these magnificent animals. You don't have to be able to dive but if you are certified you will be able to go deeper, where there are more sharks. Be wary of going with tours that feed the sharks. This is banned in other parts of the world as it encourages sharks to associate humans with food, thus putting us more at risk from shark attacks. There should be plenty of dives that don't feed the sharks. You will still see plenty of them.

Glenelg
A seaside suburb just a short tram ride from the city. There's a lovely beach here and a nice area to walk around or drink coffee. The beach is good for swimming, bodyboarding, sunbathing, or just enjoying the sunset. The Rodney Fox Shark Experience in the Glenelg Town Hall is worth a look. There's the Glenelg Jazz Festival in October.
Henley Beach is another good beach and is quieter than Glenelg. |
