The Rest of the Northern TerritoryKatherine is a small town, and is really just a gateway to the Nitmiluk National Park for most tourists. Like in a lot of outback towns, there's a sizeable population of Aboriginal here. You may feel a bit of tension in the air, so be careful, especially at night or when purchasing alcohol. Katherine is one of the best places to buy an authentic didgeridoo. Katherine GorgeThis is either one 15km long gorge, or 13 seperate gorges. Swimming and canoeing are allowed in the dry season. You can also take a cruise. If that's not your cup of tea, you can take a short hike up to a lookout to enjoy the sensational views.
A lake lies at the bottom of the falls, which is really good for swimming. Only strong swimmers should attempt the swim out to the waterfall, although there is a walking track that brings you to the falls.
Go swimming in the thermal pools, which are lovely and warm. Bring your snorkelling mask as there are tiny turtles living at the top end of the pool.
Home to the oldest pub in the Northern Territory, it also has the longest runway in Australia where they used to land B52 Bombers in WWII. It's still used occasionaly by the flying doctors
Have a walk around here and marvel at the huge odd shaped rocks. There's a great photo opportunity in front of the two big rocks that you will probably familiar with. Other things to see on the way to Alice SpringsNot much really, the anotomically correct 'big man', the tropic of capricorn, the highest point on the Stuart highway, there's also a photo op on the unsealed road that leads to Queensland. It has a sign which says 'no fuel for 500km'. That's pretty much it, apart from lots and lots of bush.
