Kangaroo Island

Go here to see Australian animals in their natural habitat. Almost a third of the island is protected national park and the flora and fauna flourishes here.

There's plenty to do here. Rent out kayaks or surfboards. Go scuba diving. Take a quad bike tour at night when most animals are active. Or just rent a car and explore this magical island on your own.

Go wildlife spotting in the forests of Flinders Chase National Park. Trek around the Cape de Couedie with its massive cliffs and walk down to the Admirals' Arch, an archway cut out by the sea. You should spot some seals down here. Check out the Remarkable Rocks around 2km east of the cape.

No matter where you go on this island, you will find plenty to see and do so go and explore. You can get a bus from Adelaide Central bus station and this will connect with the ferry to the island.

Barossa Valley

Probably the most famous wine producing district in Australia and one of the oldest. Take a wine tour from Adelaide or even better make your own way. Rent a bike when you get here and cycle around to a few of the many wineries in the valley.

There are some small towns in the valley such as Nariootpa and Tanunda which are surrounded by vineyards and are good to walk around or get something to eat.

Adelaide Hills

Head up here to get away from it all, and go for walks through forests and along gorges. Highlights include Cleland Wildlife Park, Mount Lofty Summit and Botanical Gardens, and Morialta Conservation Park. The Hills are not far from Adelaide, around 12km. You can get a bus from Currie Street in the city.

Flinders Ranges

Stretching over 400km over rugged and dry landscape, the Ranges are a bushwalkers dream, but caution should be taken. As always, take plenty of supplies, let people know where you are going.

Coober Peddy

Coober Peddy is the opal capital of Australia, and maybe even the world. Half the population live undergroundin caverns to escape the heat. The weather is extreme here, very hot during the day and very cold at night. Have a look for some opals yourself in the Jewellers shop opal field.
